battery recharges - 2006/07/28 17:37 suppose that I buy a Wilderness thing and go off into the sunset.

How many charges will the battery take before it needs replacement?

I commute 12 miles per day which = 60 per week which = 3000 per year
= $1200 per year at 40 cents per mile in car costs (IRS figures),

one decent bike plus one wilderness kit = 600 bucks and if we recahrge it for every 20 miles that is 3000/20 = 150 charges.

Can the standard Wilderness battery handle this many charges?

The way the actual charging would be is one per day = 250 charges (50 wks x 5 days)

Can wilderness handle 250 charges?

Yes, good Sealed Lead Acid batteries are usually rated for 300 charging cycles, providing you charge them correctly.
The single most important thing with SLA batteries is to NEVER leave them in a discharged state.
Ideally, have a spare charger at work or carry one with you, and recharge as soon as you can after getting there/getting home.
The other factor is depth of discharge (DOD). If you don't completely drain the batteries on each trip, they will last much longer.
The new BB Battery EB series is rated for 500 charge cycles, at 70% DOD.
