Re: Changing top speed limit - 2005/12/11 12:34
I'm usually the avid cyclist; however, the EVT moped is hard to resisit. Just to set the record straight, we have tested our 5HP EVTs at a top speed of 35mph on a flat road. This is plenty of speed with lots of torque (that is what you REALLY need to avoid a wreck) for an average city street. Choose a different route if you are cruising down 50-60 mph roads. Remember this is just a MOPED, not a MOTORCYCLE!
We are however, testing out 2 new designs of larger scooters that will have adjustable controllers so that a choice can be made for top speed. We need proof of this and proof that this does not damage the controller from excess heat or inadequate gauge wiring. Of course range would be lowered, but we think the Valence Technology phosphate based LI Ion batteries may be a viable solution to that problem. These are not quite available for full fledged commercial sales; Valence is trying to get several scooter manf. to test them out. With guaranteed sales & distribution then Valence can begin more production and basic economics sez that more demand will create more supply and more supply can lower the pricetag--the bottom line for you and me.
We also have to make sure that new product is safe, reliable & that parts to support repair & maintenance are readily available and that the moped is DOT cert. This protects you, the end owner and the electric vehicle industry in general. We would rather see the industry monitor itself instead of the government. We see/here about cheap Chinese copies of better products every day that claim to be 'just as good' as more expensive certified products; however, shat most people don't bother to consider is what may happen with mediocre parts or untested products when they're ridden many miles at a high speed.
We'll be back with more on this topic and updates as we test!
